Air Conditioner Repair Arvada CO

Is Your AC Ready for Denver’s First Heat Wave? A Spring Checklist

May in Denver has a split personality. One week you are shoveling a late spring snowstorm. The next, you are sweating through an 85-degree afternoon wondering why you ever complained about the cold.

It is the kind of weather that makes you realize pretty quickly whether your air conditioner is ready or not.

The problem most homeowners run into? They do not think about their AC until they actually need it. And by then, every HVAC company in the Denver metro is backed up with emergency calls.

This May, be the neighbor who is already cool.

Why May Is the Right Time for an AC Tune-Up

There is a sweet spot between too cold to run the AC and everyone else calling for emergency repairs. That window is May.

The weather is warm enough to run a proper system check, but the summer rush has not started yet. Scheduling now means faster appointments, no emergency premiums, and peace of mind long before the first real heat wave rolls in.

Your May AC Checklist: 5 Things to Do Before You Flip to Cool

Before calling a professional, here are five things you can do yourself:

  1. Replace your air filter. If you have not swapped your filter since fall, do it now. A clogged filter makes your system work harder, drives up your energy bill, and can cause your AC to overheat and shut down.
  2. Remove the cover. If you have one, take off the winter cover to allow the unit to breathe.
  3. Clear your outdoor unit. Winter and early spring leave behind leaves, dirt, and sometimes hail damage. Give your condenser unit at least two feet of clearance on all sides and gently rinse off any debris with a garden hose.
  4. Test your thermostat. Set it to cool and a temperature lower than your home currently reads. Does your system kick on within a minute or two? If it does not respond or makes strange noises, that is worth a call.
  5. Check your vents and registers. Blocked supply or return vents are one of the most common and most overlooked reasons homes do not cool evenly. Move furniture, rugs, or drapes that might be in the way.
  6. Listen for anything unusual. Rattling, squealing, grinding, or short-cycling (turning on and off every few minutes) are signs your system needs attention before summer heats up.

3 Signs You Need a Professional

DIY maintenance only goes so far. Call a professional if you notice any of the following:

  • Your AC runs but will not bring your home below a certain temperature. This often points to a refrigerant issue.
  • Ice is forming on your indoor or outdoor unit.
  • Water is pooling around your air handler. This is a sign your condensate drain line may be clogged.
